		<description>inPowered has pioneered a new form of advertising that features expert reviews instead of traditional ads. As such, they needed some help figuring out how to tell their story to potential clients. My role was multi-faceted, a large part of it revolved around infographics and story-telling. This took place through decks, infographics, web and icon design.

		<description>Breakfast By DesignIn my thesis work I explore the topic of how design creates desire. I've explored in depth one small slice of this huge question by narrowing my focus to one highly designed, highly profitable product: children's cereal. (You can read more about my process leading up to this here).

Behind children's cereal's friendly, colorful design lies a more sinister purpose, creating desire in kids, and its very effective. Every aspect of kid's cereal's design, from the type, to the illustration, to the cereal itself, is there to recreate our perception of what we're buying. A blend of corn, oats, sugar, dextrose, corn syrup, yellow #5 &#38; 6 and a few dozen other ingredients transforms into a magical leprechaun’s Lucky Charms or a caveman's pebbles. This process also increases cereal's value turning 20 cents worth of raw ingredients into a 5 dollar product.

In my thesis I attempt to not only understand this bizarre, alchemical quality of design, but also to show ways design can pull back the curtains on this process, exposing the manipulation of perception.

IllustrationPart of my thesis work involved understanding how to create work that imitates the style of cereal design then twisting it and exaggerating it to show it in a new light. I began by playing with the way milk is portrayed. On every box the milk is shown leaping from the bowl in a glorious explosion as if to say "this cereal is so fun that even the milk is getting involved." I wanted to mess with this and exaggerate it to extreme proportions to show how ridiculous this is. My studies then became stranger and more psychedelic, taking on a life of their own.

Three DimensionsSince the world of cereal is by nature flat, I wanted to see what would happen when I start bringing impossible cereal objects into the real world. I crafted several milk splashes coming from bowls. This is what ultimately led to the centerpiece of my thesis exhibition.

		<description>PhotoboothThe world that children's cereal advertising promises is completely absurd. Not once have I been chased by a talking rabbit for my Trix, never have I taken a bite of Lucky Charms and seen leprechauns riding rainbows and never has the milk jubilantly exploded from my bowl. These stories seem more like they're advertising an acid trip than breakfast.

I wanted to make this impossible world real and allow people to actually exist in it. I created a photobooth where exhibition attendees could pose with my exploding milk sculptures and, for the duration of a photo, put themselves in this world.

&#60;img src="http://payload84.cargocollective.com/1/2/76555/3987042/pose.jpg" width="580" height="704" width_o="580" height_o="704" src_o="http://payload84.cargocollective.com/1/2/76555/3987042/pose_o.jpg" data-mid="20936095"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload84.cargocollective.com/1/2/76555/3987042/kyle.jpg" width="670" height="552" width_o="670" height_o="552" src_o="http://payload84.cargocollective.com/1/2/76555/3987042/kyle_o.jpg" data-mid="20936094"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

ResultsThe results were often hilarious. People knew exactly what to do with the props offered them and posed in a variety of exciting poses. The results were printed on the spot as well as uploaded digitally to twitter. You can browse the entire selection at twitter.com/cerealworld

		<description>I worked with ad agency Attik on their recent Many Shades of Gay campaign for the San Francisco Aids foundation. This campaign was designed to get gay and bisexual men in the San Francisco Bay Area to get tested for HIV every six months. For it they created a website celebrating the diversity of the gay community with the use of a highly customizable avatar generator. These avatars were then used in traditional advertising spots such as bus stops, bar coasters, and on the sides of MUNI trains.

My role in this was to help tackle the enormous amount of illustrations they needed to pull this off. For this project I created over 200 separate vector illustrations, including nearly every jacket and shirt, as well as quite a few of the other accessories.

		<description>Poster and brochure design for the 2012 First Year Honors Program exhibition at CCA. The theme for this exhibition was "Process", as in the process of how you generate work. I began by cutting out letters to spell the exhibition's name. Inspired by its theme I decided to use scraps generated by my process as well.

		<description>I was inspired by the cute packaging of Japanese children's candy and wanted to design my own take on the matter. I created the brand "Happy Monster" for fruit-flavored gum and designed the boxes to smile as they were opened.

The logo I made for this project won the Wolda Logo Design Annual award for best of the Americas and second best worldwide.
